Hip pain is a very common complaint, especially amongst women but the underlying cause of this condition varies from person to person. The reasons for having pain in the hip can be quite varied and symptoms also vary from mild to severe. It may be due to a muscular dysfunction or may relate to circulatory inflammation issues or joint problems or any or all of these at the same time.

The most common cause of hip pain

The most common cause of pain in the hip is arthritis and this can be either degenerative osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. The first of these is often referred to as a ‘wear and tear’ problem as the joint or the normally protective joint cartilage wears away over time. This is often a gradual process along with aging but putting on weight can aggravate the problem. Also the symptoms can come and go with the sufferer having bad days or months and good days by turn. The wear and tear process may also be quickened by excessive use as often happens in high impact sports such as football or running with hurdle jumps, so even fit and younger people can suffer from this problem. Overusing the joints and causing a resultant injury to the supporting ligaments and muscles can lead to inflammation in the area.

accidents which lead to fractures can also be a cause of the development of chronic hip pain. Pain from osteoarthritis is most often experienced when turning from side to side in bed and when getting up from a sitting position when it is often experienced as stiffness. It can also be difficult to walk for any amount of time and each step can feel very sharp in the hip area and this often causes limping.

Generally, taking joint supportive supplements like glucosamine and drugs that work to reduce inflammation alongside a regime of physiotherapy will suffice to manage the symptoms. however sometimes surgery may be necessary when the condition becomes more severe. Total hip replacement surgery may be needed for the more severe end stages of osteoarthritis and this type of treatment often leads to a whole new lease of life.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory condition that not only affects the joint membranes, eating away at the cartilage but can also affect the whole body. It is often experienced as stiffness and swelling of the joints and can often make you feel tired and may also be associated with difficulty in sleeping and sweating. The pain can come and go, varying from quiet or mild pain periods to times when it flares up and is more severe. Over time joints can become deformed. Treatment is usually restricted to approriate medicines and a regime of specially tailored exercise and some rest.

Other common causes of hip pain:

* hip bursitis or inflammation of the bursae, which are fluid filled sacs that normally act to provide a cushioning effect for the joint

* whatever causes an inflammatory response in the body such as certain virus strains

* the side effects of cetain medications such as corticosteroids

* sleep problems, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia

* pain that is referred from another injury or area such as from a herniated disc, which travels down the nerve paths to the hip area

* referred pain from sciatica, or irritation of the sciatic nerve
