Gouty arthritis, misconceptions and history

The subject of this article gouty arthritis is very different from the other types of arthritis. Most of the time gouty arthritis starts with an sudden attack of severe and extreme pain in the joints of mostly feet and leg joints but it can also occur in other joints in the body. This acute and extreme pain usually occurs when there is to much uric acid build up it the joints.
Gouty arthritis is where there is too much uric acid produced or when the kidney is no longer able to get rid of the uric acid like it should be. Many researchers are still working on why this happens because as of right now, the cause is unknown. But what is know is that males are more common to get this, along with people who drink a lot of alcohol, and women who are postmenopausal. Gouty arthritis is also seen in people who already suffer from obesity, kidney disease, sickle cell anemia, and diabetes.
Gouty arthritis in History
When we think of people with gouty arthritis we usually see an image of an overweight English lord in a drafty castle drinking port with an old dog laying on his feet and in fact when we look at history those men are undoubtedly in the majority. According to wikipedia there are many notable sufferers of gouty arthritis and they have included under the section royalty and nobility:

- Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor
- Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor[48]
- Frederick the Great
- King George IV
- King Henry VIII
But also Charles Darwin and Isaac Newton where well known sufferers of gouty arthritis.
